About Diani Chale Marine National Reserve

Located along Kenya's south coast, the Diani Chale Marine National Reserve encompasses a coastal tract stretching approximately 30 kilometers between the towns of Diani and Chale. This protected marine environment covers both terrestrial and marine habitats including coral reefs, mangrove forests, seagrass beds, and sandy beaches. The reserve is globally recognized for its vibrant coral reef systems, which form an underwater sanctuary for a wide array of marine species such as green sea turtles, dolphins, moray eels, and colorful reef fish. Mangrove forests within the reserve support crucial nursery habitats for juvenile fish and safeguard the shoreline against erosion. Established in the 1960s, the reserve aims to preserve Kenya's coastal biodiversity while providing sustainable benefits to local communities through regulated fishing and tourism. Recreational activities focus largely on snorkeling and scuba diving at some of East Africa's richest coral gardens, alongside beachcombing and guided eco-tours. The reserve also offers opportunities for birdwatching and visits to local fishing villages that provide cultural insights. Visitors find the white sand beaches ideal for relaxation and watersports. The Diani Chale Marine National Reserve balances conservation with community involvement, striving to protect its delicate ecosystems amid growing tourism pressures. Its proximity to the vibrant town of Diani Beach provides convenient access while maintaining a relatively untouched marine environment. As one of Kenya's key marine protected areas, it plays a critical role in marine research, education, and sustainable coastal management in the Indian Ocean region.
